Why You Can’t Skip Holiday Posts in Your Social Plan

Ask any marketer worth his or her salt and they will tell you that it’s vitally important to connect with customers on every possible channel during the “holiday season.” Namely, late October through Christmas. People are shopping for holiday gifts during that time, and positioning your brand so it’s top of mind means more sales and a bigger customer base. But holiday season isn’t the only time you should be creating and pushing out holiday posts. Here’s why.

Why do we call holidays, holidays? One dictionary entry calls it “a day of festivity or recreation when no work is done.” Maybe that’s why we create holidays on days other than the nationally or internationally accepted days off. Things like National Donut Day or Best Friends Day give us that feeling of something special. Even though we have to work. Psychologically, these types of days signal the brain that things aren’t so bad, that there is cause for celebration. That’s why it’s important to use these “extra” holidays in your content marketing plan. Why do people like these type of posts so much?

They’re Shareable

Who doesn’t want to share Best Friends Day with their best friend? Who doesn’t want to share National Donut Day in that time between breakfast and lunch when, for some reason, we’re uncontrollably hungry? These are holiday posts, yes, but they are social posts, and that’s what makes them so attractive. Smart social media marketers invite even more audience participation by asking a question – “What’s your favorite donut flavor?” or by opening the post up to outside tags “Tag your best friend.” People don’t want to just read social posts, they want to interact with them.

They’re A Great Opportunity for a Visual Post

We know that people respond exponentially more to visual posts than plain text. There’s plenty of evidence to back that up. Holidays are a great opportunity to create a visual post that invites shares just because it’s so pretty, interesting or funny. Graphic designers can have a heyday with creating images for posts like this, but there are templates available to help you as well.

They’re Brand-Friendly

Not only do brands find these types of posts an easy win, but they make your brand look good to your fans and followers. You’re posting something timely, attractive, with an interactive aspect and that gives people the warm fuzzies. The overall marketing plan might not say the word “warm fuzzies” in the strategic plan, but you want to inspire them, nonetheless.
